The History of Laughter

The museum was first opened in 1975 by the Istanbul Municipality with the initiative of the Caricature' Association, but was closed on 12 September 1980. Later, with the collapse of this building, the museum was completely closed.
On February 27, 1989, a new museum was opened in the Gazanferağa Complex, located on the Bozdoğan Kemeri junction on Ataturk Boulevard in Saraçhanebaşı.

The Caricature and Humor Museum saves a cultural accumulation, which is the clearest document of our social history, from extinction and reflects it day by day in various activities. Also, in the museum that communicates with similar institutions in other countries, the famous names of world cartoon art are being introduced to the people of Istanbul through personal or mixed exhibitions.
Caricature and Humor Museum is a living museum that constantly evolves according to contemporary museology understanding and is therefore constantly monitored. Variable and interesting exhibitions opened in exhibition halls and increasingly enriching Humor Library and Archive are worth seeing. In addition, anyone who wishes to work in the original printing workshop under the supervision of an expert.

Conference, panel, small concerts, video shows are among the other events of the museum. The museum mainly consists of the following units;

EXHIBITION HALLS:

There are two types of exhibits complementing each other in the museum.
Continuous exhibition: The section where the Turkish caricature is sung from the beginning to the day is described with examples and documents.
Variable exhibitions: This is the exhibition where the artworks of the dormitory and world artists are exhibited and introduced. At least one exhibition is opened every month.

Humor Library:

Caricature, humor and cultural publications related to these subjects, which are published or published in Turkey and in the world, are brought together and presented to the audience.

ARCHIVE:

It is the section where original or duplicated works of old and contemporary caricatures are collected, classified by persons, countries, subjects, protected.

ORIGINAL PRINTING WORKSHOP:

In this workshop, anyone who wishes to teach an original printing techniques by an expert. The facilities of the artists' workshop are presented, and collective exhibitions are opened with works produced.
